All vegans will be opposing the killing of animals. When even a small scratch hurts us, it is difficult to think of pain of death. but this will apply to plants as well eventually. We can't sit w/o eating. We have to just follow the great Geetha, where Krishna says to offer him "Patra, Pushpa, Phalam & Thoyam" & then eat them. I am not sure if "mamsa, madya" offered becomes pure (no papa) as Bedara Kannappa did.
Very very difficlut situation Krishna Shastry !

Torturing animals and killing annimals for food are two diffrant issues....This applies even erasing vegitation and using vegitation for food and other necessitis..But this can be told to the people who do not have ego problem or inferiority complex
Most vegetarians consider it a moral imperative to oppose meat eating, but fail to consider the rights of plants. It is easy to anthropomorphize animals but as science progresses and our understanding of plants increases, (http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/04/28/if-peas-can-talk-should-we-eat-them/)eating plants would seem just as unethical as meat eating.
I think balancing my needs and wants with others on this planet and doing the best I can to propagate the survival of all species is what I can live with. Here's another article that might be of interest http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/06/magazine/the-ethicist-contest-winner-give-thanks-for-meat.html?_r=1
@Lakshmi: It is sad that some people refer to these kinds of articles and conveniently turn blind eyes on cruelty on animals which doesn't need any proof. Even that is easy, isn't it? i.e. pointing at such articles and happily continue torturing animals.
Lets keep aside these articles and use common sense for a moment. It is quite understandable that science explores to what extent plants can "live life"; but that doesn't mean that plants experience pain. Pain is a unique sensation given by nature for specific purposes; plants are different kinds of living beings that do not need such sensation for day to day purposes.
@Lakshmi: One more point. I don't think any truly compassionate person would say that killing plants is perfectly okay. It is not just pain that matters, taking away life is also an important issue because by doing that one is taking away its right to survive and evolve.
But animals (including us) don't have power to absorb energy directly from inert materials, that's how nature has built us. And plants generally are plenty in number, so "killing" doesn't really affect their evolution much. Since they don't have "pain", it seems fairly okay to embrace them as our energy source instead of animals.
Ethical meat is a big myth - leaving out few exceptions, it can materialize only in theories, not in practice. That's the hard truth, and we should accept the fact that meat eating is one of the largest contributors for animal suffering.
@Krishna,
First of all, I want to thank you for your blogs. It is refreshing to see these questions being explored.
My intention with this comment was to bring to notice that there's a possibility that plants do feel pain. Humans identify with animals closest to their biology and we think that they feel pain but we are oblivious to the plants's pain. If pain is used as yardstick for vegetarianism, then we simply don't have enough information now but research is emerging to show that they probably do.
My other point is that if one wants to promote 'not killing' of animals for food, we might be better off making an environmental case and health case than 'killing of animals is immoral' case.
Finally, about affecting the evolution of animals and not plants, I would argue that ever since humans became agriculturalists, we've affected (even shaped) the plant's evolution to a greater degree than we have of animals.
@Lakshmi: Appreciate your detailed comments. You are absolutely right that vegetarianism has 3 benefits - its healthy, environmental friendly and its relatively more compassionate. But in each of these cases our approach with others have to be different.
In the present world, environmental reason gives vegetarians more right to question others, no doubt. That's what I tried to highlight in my other blog "An open question to non vegans". In this article, I just wanted people to know that there is no shame in fighting for animal rights too.
I welcome efforts in the direction of respecting plants too, but if that is used only as a justification to continue treating animals mercilessly, then its tragic.
well my friend, do kindly read about the experiments that jagadish chandra bose conducted on plants nearly a century ago and refresh your knowledge.
@Charles: Thanks for the feedback. I have already answered your comments in above discussion with Lakshmi; request you to kindly go through the same and let me know if you still think differently.
