Once again, the world environment day
is nearing. Many people will start talking about increased fuel and
electricity usage, waste management, land-water-air pollution, organic
& biodegradable products, population control and so on. Of course,
all these are extremely important subjects, but most people will keep
silent on one urgent and important need i.e. to go veg.
Great brains across the globe have clearly identified
animal farming and non-vegetarian dietary choices of people as one of
the biggest root causes behind environmental destruction, and yet hardly any policy changes
have happened in this regard. Why? I can see following reasons:
- Tendency to continue to live in denial, even after learning the facts
- "Why should I sacrifice? Let others do first, then I will see at my convenience" kind of selfish attitude
- Our leaders are anyway reflection of the society, so no point in blaming them beyond a point
Even lacto-vegetarianism is no good for the environment, because today beef industry and dairy industry go hand in hand, supporting each other very much. Hence, I sincerely hope that more and more people adopt or at least move towards vegan lifestyle, in the best interest of our own home, earth. This is one of the most basic things that we can do, and in parallel we can work towards reversing the damage already caused, and minimize/stop other forms of destruction.
Personally, even though I started a green business (vegan restaurant) recently, I cannot claim to be perfect, but at least I feel that I am trying with greater energy and spirit.
Couple of articles for you to go through and ponder upon:
